Beautiful Jewel Beetle mounted in a glass dome. This particular specimen is one of the largest of all jewel beetles.
Glass dome is 4 inches x 4 inches, and the base is painted black. Overall size is 5" wide x 4 1/2" tall.
The Jewel Beetles, or Metallic wood-boring beetles belong to a family of beetles known as Buprestidae. They are called Jewel beetles because of their often very bright, colorful, metallic, iridescent bodies; as a result, they can be very sought after by collectors. The elytra, or wing-covers, are sometimes used to make jewelry because of their incredible shine and color.
