Description
Lovely pair of pyrite encrusted ammonites. The larger piece is approximately 2 1/8 inches high and 1 7/8 inches at its widest point. The smaller piece is approximately 1 inch wide and 1 3/4 inches tall.
These beautifully pyritized ammonite fossils were collected near Forcheim, Germany, and are approximately 185 million years old.
Ammonites were predatory mollusks that resembled a squid with a shell. These cephalopods had eyes and tentacles, as well as a spiral shell. Even though their shells resemble that of our modern day nautilus, they are more closely related to the octopus.
