Amethyst is a semiprecious violet or purple variety of Quartz, and is the birthstone for February.  The name comes from the Ancient Greek words meaning "not intoxicate", a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkeness.

Quartz is one of the most plentiful minerals on earth, making up about 12% of the Earth's crust.
