Bracelet made of Malachite with 8 mm spheres
Malachite is usually found near copper ore deposits, and as a result, is a beautiful copper related mineral with distinctive green veining. Malachite was extensively mined at the Great Orme Mines in Britain 3,800 years ago, using stone and bone tools. The most famous malachite mines were in the Ural mountains in Russia, where 20 ton blocks were once taken from the quarries to decorate the palaces of the Russian tsars. Today malachite is a scarcer material and the most important producer is the Congo (formerly known as Zaire). The stone's name derives from the Greek for "mallow-green stone". The mineral was given this name due to its resemblance to the leaves of the mallow plant.
