Description
The eastern mole is a small mammal that lives primarily underground, and is highly specialized for a subterranean life. A fleshy, moveable nose/snout projects over the mouth with nostrils on the upper part, and is used as an organ of touch. The tiny, degenerative eyes are hidden in the fur; the eyelids are fused and sight is limited to simply distinguishing between light and dark. The ear opening is small and concealed in the fur, but hearing is fairly acute. A short, thick tail is lightly furred and is used as an organ of touch, guiding the mole when it moves backward in the tunnel. The eastern mole is a stealthy animal that is rarely seen, but it often leaves obvious signs of its presence in the form of mounds of excavated dirt and raised earth tunnels.
Our eastern mole skeleton is approximately 6 1/2 inches long, 2 3/8 inches at its widest point and 1 inch at its tallest point. You will receive this specimen or one just like it. We are happy to send you a photo of the exact specimen you will receive.
