Elephant Bird, Aepyornis maximus, authentic eggshell fragment. These are beautiful fragments of an elephant bird eggshell that date from about 20,000 years ago.
Aepyornis maximus was an enormous flightless bird that lived in Madagascar and went extinct in the 1700's. These birds were ratites…flightless birds like the Ostrich, Rhea, Cassowary, Kiwi, and the Extict Moa. The Elep[hant bird as just under 10' tall, and weighed up to 1,700 pounds. Their eggs held up to 2 gallons of fluid, were up to 13" tall, and sometimes reached 3' in circumference. The Kiwi bird of New Zealand is the closest living relative of the Elephant bird.
