Description
Stunning ammonite pair from Madagascar. This set is unique because of its incredible calcite formations. The calcite is actually translucent in areas (see the photo with the light placed behind the ammonite).
Ammonites are a class of extinct invertebrates. These beautiful marine animals thrived in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras, which equates to approximately 408 to 65 million years ago. The Ammonites are ancient cephalopods that are closely related to the modern day, chambered nautilus, cuttlefish, octopus, and squid. Scientists sometimes use ammonites as index fossils to date the age of rocks in which the fossils appear.
This pair is approximately 7 1/2 inches tall and 6 3/4 inches wide.
