Description
Gorgeous Blue Jewel beetle spread with its wings open, mounted in a black wooden frame. The top, hard-shelled elytra, which in essence are the forewings of the beetle, open to reveal the actual wings with which the beetle flies. The elytra primarily serve as a protective case for the "hind"-wings (picture a butterfly or moth; it has the top, or forewings, as well as the hindwings), and to fly, the beetle opens the elytra, unfolds (if the wings are longer than the abdomen) the wings and flies…most often while keeping the elytra open as well.
The Jewel Beetles, or Metallic wood-boring beetles belong to a family of beetles known as Buprestidae. They are called Jewel beetles because of their bright, colorful, and often metallic and very irridescent bodies, and as a result are often very sought after by collectors. The elytra, or wing-covers, are sometimes used to make jewelry because of their incredible shine and color.
Outside dimensions of the frame are: 6" x 6" x 1" deep.
