Description
Lovely bee eater skeleton mounted in a glass dome. The dome sits on a black, 6 3/4 inch wide base, and is approximately 6 1/2 inches tall. The bee eater skeleton is approximately 4 1/2 inches from beak to tail and approximately 3 1/2 inches tall.
Bee eaters are characterized by richly colored plumage, slender bodies, and usually elongated central tail feathers. All have long, down-turned bills.
As their name suggests, bee-eaters predominantly eat flying insects, especially bees and wasps, which are caught on the wing from an open perch. The stinger is removed by repeatedly hitting and rubbing the insect on a hard surface. During this process, pressure is applied to the insect, thereby discharging most of the venom.
